 Signals Flow is a GDPR compliant (smart camera based) or GDPR free (lidar based) machine vision solution for counting people and traffic flow in urban environments. As a software company targeting machine vision use cases in the real world, we need reliable hardware to publish for. For the past few years, for our smart city solution, we've partnered with one of the most forward looking machine vision hardware providers in the market - Luxonis.
Luxonis's mono and stereo camera hardware has proven sturdy enough to withstand the sometimes harsh Finnish environment and proven flexible enough to cover multiple experimental use cases. We're happy to announce that Signals Flow, our real-time lidar based people counting and tracking technology is being shown this week at the bi-annual Väylät & Liikenne 2025 fair at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti, Finland by our collaborators Ramboll Finland.
We're pleased to tell you that Signals was recently chosen to be a part of a pilot for measuring urban loading zone usage by Forum Virium Helsinki, the innovation company for the city of Helsinki. For the pilot, we're currently running four battery powered Signals units in Annankatu in the center of the city. The data is then automatically processed and anonymised on-device after which it is transmitted to our server where it is visualised for city personnel doing urban planning and forming a new long-term strategy for loading zones in the city. “The primary goal of the pilot is to gather information on the utilization rates of existing loading zones in the city center and to evaluate the functionality of battery-powered monitoring devices in a real urban environment,” says Matias Oikari, Project Manager at Forum Virium Helsinki. Picture by Jussi Knuuttila, Forum Virium Helsinki.  As part of the pilot, the sending of real-time loading zone usage information directly to logistics drivers is also being tested. The real-time usage data is sent to Tietorahti Oy‘s Maps4Cargo application, which is used daily by over 20,000 professional drivers in Finland. The real-time information on the availability of loading zones, produced by Signals is visualized real-time in the map application, allowing drivers to monitor the availability of equipped spaces and use this information for route planning. The Uusimaa region covers the greater Helsinki metropolitan area and all of its 1,5 million residents. The law states that almost all organisations who maintain premises (offices, churches, stores etc) where over 10 people can meet have to have a actionable plan and take concrete steps to lower the risk of contamination between users of the space.
Having chosen Signals (with it's inbuilt Covid-19 risk estimator) to be their customer counting solution in the October 2020, Finnish design leader Pentik Oy was able to in just one day adopt, chain-wide, the real-time capabilities of Signals for keeping both customers and employees safe. For Pentik, this includes staff receiving automated messages from Signals when ever the amount of people inside the store reaches 80% and 100% of the maximum allowed as well as Signals kiosks placed at the entrances to the stores that display the current fill rate for the customers in the form of easily understandable green-yellow-red signal lights. On Saturday the 27th of February, Pentik sent out the pictured newsletter describing their actions and Signals to their whole email subscriber base. Needless to say we're both humbled and thrilled to be working with such an amazing, forward looking brand and organisation.
